I recently found out that I have a mild case of HPV. There is this guy that I really like, we have known each other for about 1.5 years now, and have dated in the past. Things are going well between us, and I think we are pretty close to dating again. I'm afraid to tell him that I have this. What if he gets it, even though we would be using a condom? Is there any way a guy can find out if he has HPV or not, or what dangers is there for guys, since I know it can cause cervical cancer in women? It can be transmitted sexually, also, right?

I have a mild case of dysplasia. I recently had my yearly pap test done and it came back abnormal. I am 23 years old. He is 23 years old also. My last boyfriend, he had gential warts, and was not diagnosed until mid-relationship, we had already had unprotected sex. I made the stupid decision to keep having sex with him, which I am now regreting.

I am feeling extremely guilty because about 2 months ago, I had sex with my "soon-to-be-boyfriend" (this was before I found out about my HPV). I am afraid to tell him, because I don't want it to ruin anything that we had going so far.

HPV. This stands for Human Papillomavirus. This causes genital warts in women and men. HPV is a common virus that is spread by direct sexual contact with a person that is infected. The virus is transmitted to or from the genitals, mouth, throat, or anus during sexual activity. It usually enters the body in areas that recieve minor trauma during sex. HPV is most often in an "asleep" state meaning that most often people do not have any symptoms. If symptoms do develop, they usually occur in 2-3 months after exposure with a range of 3 weeks-2 years. Most men are unaware of the warts until they are pointed out by a physician.

Since this is a virus, there is no known cure. There are many options for removing warts such as freezing or using a laser. There are also some creams that may help. There have been no studies on the transmission of HPV with protected sex however even with protected sex, the lower abdomen(if there are warts on it) could be rubbed hard enough for the skin to break transmitting the virus to the other person. Whatever you do now is up to you. Listen, this is an extremely common virus. It is estimated that an average of 1 million people will have some form of genital warts per year. Since you and this guy have already had sex, it would be best to tell him. Personally I would take him to see your doctor with you so the doctor can explain this in more detail. Most guys will fear the worst and break it off or do something stupid because they don't understand it. Tell him.... If he doesn't want to be with you then he isn't for you hun.
