Question

I have a 1 yr old who has had a high temp off and on ...

Sent to Health Experts April 22, 2006 3:12 p.m.

I have a 1 yr old who has had a high temp off and on of 102.8 for the past 3 days. I did take her to the dr last night - he said he didn't see any ear infections or respiratory infections. While we were there she did throw up - and so he felt it might be a stomache bug. This is the only time that she has thrown up. She eats some. Her bowels and urination seem to be fine. She doesn't want a lot to drink. I can't seem to get her temp to go down for long. Could it be something more serious? I've seen no other signs of her stomache bug. The doctor did tell us to bring her back today if her fever didn't go away.

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 111 1

Already Tried:
Motrin and tylenol every couple of hours

Can you confirm the exact doage of each of motrin and tylenol you are giving your little one?

Any sign of rash?

What other techniques have you used for bringing down her temp?

What type of thermometer are you using eg ear, oral, forehead etc

Thanks

We have been using what the doctor told us every 4 hrs 1/2 tsp of ibuprofren and 6 hrs 1/2 tsp of motrin.

There is no rash.

We have been putting cool wash cloths and giving her luke warm baths.

Thanks!

Young children do have a problem regulating body temperature, especially whe fighting off a viral infection. If there is no rash then it is a case of managing symptoms until it goes down.

The important thing is to maintain fluid levels, signs of dehydration in a child include dry nappies, or very strong smelling nappies.

As it has gone on for more than 3 days, we do suggest popping back to the doctor with young children so he/she can check for signs of dehydration. The other risk with sustained high temp is febrile seizures but it happens less when temp less than 104.

Hope this information is useful
