Hi,

Peripheral Neuropothy is a term used to describe damage to the peripheral nervous system. (which transmits information from the brain and the spinal cord to every other part of your body. There are more then 100 types that have been identified. Each with its own symptoms and prognosis.

Some of the symptoms include

temporary numbness, tingling, and pricking sensations, sensitivity to touch, or muscle weakness. Others may suffer more extreme symptoms, including burning pain (especially at night), muscle wasting, paralysis, or organ or gland dysfunction.

No medical treatments exist that can cure the inherited form of Neuropathy. However there are treatments for other forms. I general taking care of your body, avoiding toxins such as cigarettes, alcohol and drugs and exercising are all things that need to be done. You may also need to correct any vitamin deficiency. Systematic diseases may require more complex treatments.

In acute Neuropathies such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, symptoms appear suddenly, progress rapidly, and resolve slowly as damaged nerves heal. Some people may have periods of relief followed by a relapse. Others may stay at the same stages for years. And some worsen over years. It is very rare for this to be fatal unless it is complicated by another diseases.

Your doctor may decide to prescribe medications to help with symptoms after a though examination and all tests being run.

Relist: I still need help.
This Neuropathy seems to be in my feet only(at this Point). I do have spine problems, but they are not involved yet. The problem is cyclical every few weeks, give or take. My feet & ankles swell up each day(they go down at night) the feet begin burning, which becomes a burning pain, that almost cripples me, it is so severe & I wind up taking pain meds for it. These symptoms will last for one to two weeks, then quit & I am fine.
The Lyrica 2X a day helps some, but not enough. I have been only tested once & this was before the swelling began. What other meds can I try beside pain meds that would keep the burning & pain from taking place (as well as the swelling)?

Hi,

Though therapy is the most effective means of helping to control the symptoms and swelling, pentoxifylline and cilostazol can also be used as well.
