Your symptoms are common to tendinitis (irritation/inflammation of one or more tendons) The tendon may have been injured in the fall and become inflammed with subsequent use. Chronic strain, arthritis, or inflammatory disorders may also cause tendonitis.
Treatment at home may include:
An OTC compression wrap, rest, elevation of injured knee, ice for 15 to 20 minutes three times a day, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin etc.) every four hours, and topical analgesics (like Icy Hot, or Aspercream, and Epsom salts.
Compression bandages should be lightweight, breathable and support your knee without interfering with circulation.
Ice may be alternated with heat after three days.
The Ibuprofen should be used continuously for three days, even as pain subsides. (for it's anti-inflammatory effect)
Epsom salts may be used in a compress, or added to a bath. Directions will be on container.
Gentle stretching exercises should be started after inflammation/pain subsides.
If you have fever, redness, increased swelling, or can not bear weight, see the Doctoe immediately.
If symptoms do not improve in 3-7 days make an appointment with your general practitioner.
