I have a shooting pain in the lower back of my head left side. It is not a constant pain.

If it is a very severe pain of sudden onset without any prior history, you should go to the ER/ yoru doctor, to rule out a serious cause like bleed/ anuerysm in the brain.
On the other hand a recurrent pain of moderate intensity could be due to migraine (especially if ther eare some visual symptoms too). ANother possibility is trigeminal neuralgia,
You would need to see a neurologist for confirming the cause of the pain
