HIV can lay dormant for many, many years before there are any clinical symptoms or signs. So no, you would not necessarily have any symptoms if you had contracted it three years ago.
An abnormal PAP, however, most often involves changes in the cells of the cervix, but can also be affected by certain sexually transmitted diseases, like Herpes, or other vaginal infections. The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the virus that is now known to be responsible for most cases of cervical dysplasia (abnormal cervical cells, sometimes called "pre-cancerous") and cervical cancer. HPV, in addition to causing cervical problems, is considered an STD.
So most often an abnormal PAP result is indicative that there was some abnormal looking cervical cells, and this requires follow-up with your gynecologist. Depending on the level of abnormality (this is called "dysplasia"), follow-up can include another PAP within a few months, additional exams, and, if necessary, more aggressive treatment.
But most "abnormal" PAPs have nothing to do with HIV.
