I am having horrible withdrawal symptoms after being taken off wellbutrin, celexa, and provigil, ten days ago. I've been on anti-depressants for 16 years. I can't stop crying, crawling out of my skin, seeing things, skin itching and on fire, diarrhea, nausea, staggering, depression, help! I can't reach my psychiatrist who did this to me!

Can I ask the reason for the abrupt withdrawal? Was a stepwise reduction discussed?

Do you take any other medication at the moment, or have any other medical problems?

I will try and help if I can.

I went to a new doc 3 weeks ago (new insurance)to have my meds managed. She thought I was on a dangerous combo (200 mg. Provigil, 40 mg. Celexa, 100 mg. Wellbutrin, all once daily)and wanted to get me off all meds immediately. Stopped Wellbutrin with 1 week taper (last dose was 2 weeks ago), Celexa by 10mgs. every 4 days (last dose was 10 mgs. 10 days ago), and last dose of Provigil was 7 days ago. Called last Friday and doc wasn't available to help with my distress, receptionist said to take Ny-Quil. Tried that, no good. Called yesterday to doc and no return call. Tried nighttime cold stuff and not helping. Called doc an hour ago and no return call. I'm feeling like I'm not even in this dimension and going out of my mind. Only other med I take is Levothroid .088 once daily.

Ideally the tapering off period would have been a little bit longer. But as you have been without them for at least 7 days then things are going to start getting better. What we don't want to happen is for you to start using cold remedies at the moment as they can contain decongestants which are stimulating and will just add to your problems. Also some of the other ingrediants are habit forming too.

What you will find helpful is a herbal remedy containing valerian. This is a natural relaxant which will counteract some of the feelings you are having.

Bach Flower remedies will also help you in this period, and herbal teas with camommille and skullcap (bit of an acquired taste but worth getting used to)

An alternative antidepressant for you is St Johns Wort but you may need to wait another week before starting this in order to have settled down after the withdrawal phase.

The diarrhoea can be settled with two or three days of loperamide (imodium) and careful diet. Do make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

You can get through this. It may be helpful to offload some of your feelings about this to a counsellor or a good friend, if you have someone to listen to you.

Regards

Just got back from the doc - actually the withdrawal was not from the antidepressants, but from the Provigil. Just took 200mg. 30 minutes ago and already feeling better. Unfortunately, this is nasty stuff and I will have to taper off more slowly. Meanwhile, my insurance doesn't cover it and it will cost $400 a month - a price I am more than willing to pay right now. Thank you for your help and I will accept your response even though it wasn't what would help me, but I appreciate your speedy response to my despair. Thank you!

I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better, do ensure your tapering off is no more than 25% dose reduction per week, or even longer although at that sort of money, I can appreciate it will be expensive!

Best wishes
