Numbness/Tingling/Pain In Body Accompanied By Itching

Sent to Health Experts June 28, 2006 9:20 p.m.

I'm a male in my mid-30s, in fairly good health, with the exception of being somewhat overweight (5'11" - 225 lbs).

I have had numbness/tingling/pain for the last month or so (I would tclassify the discomfort as as internal in nature and not on my skin). It started intermittently in my arms (mainly forearms) and has now progressed (pretty much constantly) to most of my body (legs, abdomen, back) over the last 5-7 days. I've noticed that my body has also become itchy, though I'm not sure if that is the hot summer weather and/or just something that my mind is doing to me since I'm thinking about this a lot.

At the same time, I have been battling an ongoing sinusitis problem. I began taking Levaquin (500mg for 7 days) a few weeks ago but stopped after 5 days when the numbness in my arms became more pronounced, and that's when I read some of the scary side effects of that antibiotic. After reading some of those horror stories about adverse reactions to Levaquin on the web, I'd be inclined to think that maybe that was the cause of my problem, however, I definitely noticed the numbness/tingling/pain at least a week or so before I began taking the Levaquin. Furthermore, I have taken Levaquin at least once or twice before over the last 5-7 years while being treated for sinus related problems, and I did not experience any noticeable adverse reactions.

My internist didn't seem overly concerned when I saw him a couple of weeks ago, but he did refer me to a neurologist who I am scheduled to see at the end of next week.

Any thoughts about what is going on?   I'm at the point where I am very concerned as I'm reading about MS and similar symptoms to what I'm experiencing.

You may have MS but it is not a strong possibility, because you did not have symptoms such as unsteady gait, dizziness, vertigo or double vision. MRI of the brain and examination of the spinal fluid and EP tests are good tests to rule out MS. Other possibilities may be causing your problems and needs to be ruled out are:

  • stress
  • hyperventilation
  • anxiety
  • hypocacemia
