About 3 weeks after receiving a tetanus shot in my left deltoid, my left hand went numb. It has creeped halfway up my arm now. Been numb for a month. Thumb is worst. So numb it hurts... feels like someone is pushing too hard on my thumbnail. What's wrong? And how do I make the numbness go away?

REPLIED Check Mark

Your symptoms indicate the possibility of nerve damage. Since your symptoms are worsening as time goes by, it is clear that home remedies are not going to take care of this.

You need to be checked by a doctor -- ideally, a Neurologist -- before the numbness advances any further.

A Nurologist will be able to test the involved nerve(s) and should be able to determine what is happening and what the best treatment would be.

That's kind of out of the question (affording a neurologist). I'm a single mom in school and working part time. Does the doctor who did this hold any responsibility to look at it?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Steve is right about the nerve damage. The doctor's office that gave you the shot should look at it but, it is a risk of getting the shot (or any shot) and there is nothing that can be done. There isn't really anything that can be done to avoid nerves, they are in different areas on different people where and exact location is impossible to pinpoint.

It may take a while to heal but, the nerve endings were sort of confused by the trauma and have to relearn how to send the right message. The damage is rarely permanent.

However, I would get it checked out regardless. Another underlying condition could have something to do with it.
