Sent to Health Experts July 23, 2006 11:03 a.m.

I have two black pinky toe nails. thye have been black as long as I can remember. They have never been injured, or have fallen off. they are not sore, swollen, painful, nothing. The rest of my toes on both feet are normal. It's just that both my pinky toes nails are black. I am very self conscious about this. Can it be fixed, or am I to live with it forever?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 29

Already Tried:
nothing. I just cover them with fingernail polish. I can never wear a french manicure on my toes though. It is very embarassing.

Other symptoms for the fungus:

  • nails can get flaky, brittle and chipped
  • debris gets collected under the nail
  • nail thickens

Two toe nails are black as long as you remmember suggest that one time in the past you may have had tight shoes especially on the sides where the smalll toes are located and caused bleeding under the small toe nails. The bleeding under the toe nais can change the color to black.

And there would be no pain or bleeding on the outside of my toes? Like I said I have nothing. If left untreated what will happen?

How long before that actually happens?(ball park) because they've been like this since maybe high school, or old enough to pay attention or worry about my appearances. I'm 29 now. Also, why a dermatologist rather than a foot doctor? What is the differences in how they treat foot problems?

If it is fungus infection it may take years before you loose the nail. If it is black because of bleeding under the toe nail long time ago then you will not lose the nail.

Foot doctors are better if any surgery is involved. They are basically surgeons. Dermatologist is better if no surgical procedure is involved just looking , testing and prescripton.
