How big is the bump? Have you ever had a tumor (bump) that was biopsied previously? I ask this because sometimes a tumor from several years previous in another location of your body can spread to another area of your body e.g. from your leg to the top of your head (metastasize), in which case you should find the funds to have your bump examined by a physician in person to rule out cancer.

If this is the only bump or lump you have and you have never had a suspicious bump, lump, or tumorous growth previously, then it may be safe to just observe it to make sure it doesn't grow larger.

If the bump on your head grows larger than it has been for the past 2 years, then you should definitely have it examined and possibly biopsied if necessary.

The bump is is about 1 1/2" x 1" and is round. I have never had anything like it before. I can push on it and it feels like a pocket of fluid. It does not hurt and it has not seemed to have grown in a couple of years.

I just cut my hair short and it has caused my wife to be concerned because it is visible (makes my head look egg shaped from a side view).

I have alot of acne problems on my head. I have wondered if it is not some sort of problem like that.

Thanks.

You have a large pilar cyst. Your other scalp growths are also pilar cysts. They are not acne.

Pilar cysts (also called trichilemmal cysts) are common, occurring in 5-10% of population. They are the second most common keratinizing cyst on the scalp. A pilar cyst is a smooth, movable swelling in the scalp. Pilar cysts contain keratin and its breakdown products, lined by a wall resembling the external (outer) hair root sheath. Most pilar cysts occur on the scalp.

Uncomplicated pilar cysts can easily be extracted from the dermis by a highly skilled dermatologist/surgeon. If you decide to have the large pilar cyst on the top of your head removed, then to prevent serious problems, you should have an MRI of your head to differentiate your pilar cyst from your meninges or your central nervous system. Before you have the cyst removed, I recommend that you question whether or not the dermatologist or surgeon has ever had experience removing a pilar cyst from the top of the head before because your cyst is precariously located at the top of your head and very near your meninges and central nervous system and may even be connected to it.

Pilar cysts are benign. Treatment is by surgical removal.
