I was taking Zoloft over 2 months. My hair began to fall out. My local pharmacist said that can be a side effect from Zoloft. I decided to taper off of taking the medicine. I was on 50 mg/day. I cut the dose in half for a week. Then began 25 mg every other day for a week. I began having some very weird symptoms. . .something along the lines of zaps in my head, numbness in around my lips, tremors, twitches, and more. I couldn't figure out what was causing it. This had never happened before. I am still having these symptoms. They cause dizziness and confusion. Is this caused from the Zoloft? If so, how long does it take before the body readjusts? Can this be Zoloft withdrawal?

REPLIED Check Mark

This can be caused by some withdrawl that you are experiencing. And it can take a couple of weeks for your body to re-adjust but it could also be caused from nerve problems as well with the twitches and zapping feelings that you are having so this would seem there is a need for further evaluation. The dizziness and confusion can also be caused from the withdrawl but not all of your symptoms sound related to the Zoloft, although they are right about the hair loss. I would recommend further evaluation and an MRI or Cat Scan to make sure there is not further underlying health issues causing the twitches and numbness you are experiencing.

Would I need a full MRI? I had a lower MRI a few months ago for a lower back problem. I had back surgery in June of 2000. Would an MRI of the upper body be recommended? Thank you so much for your help because I have been feeling poorly. It is affecting my work and daily life.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I would recommend a full upper MRI and possibly a Cat Scan to determine if this is related to a neurological disorder especially if this is affecting your work and your life as a whole. The numbness and zapping sensations sound like a nerve issue to me and I highly recommend seeing a neurologist. You are so very welcome and I hope this will help you to find some relief so you are not feeling so bad.
