I think I have kidney infection again. I was just treated for it about a month ago. What causes it and what can I do to prevent it? I can't afford to go to the doctor again if I can avoid it.

Hello,

If you have burning urine, you can make it alkaline by taking alkaliser satchets available in any pharmacy - it is an OTC medicine. This will decrease burning and also prevent the growth of bacteria.

Drink plenty of water - at least 10 glasses daily to flush out the bacteria. Cranberry juice can also help with symptoms in mild UTI-- as can a light diet.

Do not hold on to urine. Go as soon as you feel the urge.

Take showers not baths. This will prevent unclean water from touching your genitals.

Ciprofloxacin (500mg twice daily fro 5 days) is the drug of choice, but it is a prescription drug.

You can take Motrin 500mg twice daiky after food to decrease the inflammation.

I hope this helps.
