I am a recovering alcoholic with 26 years of continuous sobriety (complete abstinence from alcohol). I am having trouble with my feet. The symptoms resemble alcoholic neuropathy. I do not have diabetes. Is it possible to develop alcoholic neuropathy after such a long abstinence from drinking alcohol? I also have flat feet and hammer toes (second toe next to big toe), so perhaps the symptoms of numbness in my big toes and tingling while in bed could be caused from something other than neuropathy? Or, is there neuropathy without diabetes or alcoholism? The discomfort is eased when I am wearing my shoes and orthotics and am upright on my feet.

Hello,

Although neuropathy is quite common in patients with diabetes and alcoholism, anyone can develop it. I would sugest making an appointment with a podiatrist or your doctor for an accurate diagnosis.

You can try some B-12, or ask your doctor about B-12 injections as this often helps.

Here is some info, please let me know if you have questions.
