My daughter has swelling of the face. Usually of one side of her upper lip. She says the she can feel a lump when she has this swelling. She has had this swelling several time over the last couple of years, but lately it has been more often. She used to wake up with this swelling so I thought it was where the fluid would accumulate at night. But the last few times this has happened, it has been just spontanous. She is 17 and in good health very active.

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: She saw her Dr. a couple of years ago and the Dr. said that she didn' know what it was. That was all that was said.

Not a very satisfying answer when dealing with a healthy seventeen year old child! She may consider seeing an allergist for exstive testing, if this is becoming a more frequent concern. The pattern definately sounds like a inflammatory response/possibly allergic. Taking a daily antihistamine is a one possible treatment, though determining the source of the allergy is more satisfying and long term more successful. Ruling out an allergic response, testing for fluid imbalance sources may be initiated if symptoms are unresolved.

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: I have been looking at websites and I saw Melkersson-rosenthal syndrome but the disease is very vague. I haven't found out how it is diagnosed. Would you know?

Melkersson-rosenthal is a very rare disorder usually investigated through
biopsy of involved tissue and to prove the diagnosis and exclude other conditions such as infection or tumor.
Chest X-ray, blood tests and patch testing are generally used to rule out more common causes of facial swelling prior to this more invasive testing. Be cautious about allowing a web search to suggest such a rare disorder, when she may have a simple food or enviornmental allergy or be responding to cyclic variations in fluid balance and sensitivity.
