HPV Conerns from a male

Sent to Health Experts September 02 05:05 PM

I have had unprotected sex with my girlfriend on 4 differnet occasions. She was recently diagnosed with "Hight Risk" HPV. We have decided to abstain from having sex (protected or unprotected) with eachother. Apparantly there is no way for me to get tested and know whether I have it as well because there are no symptoms in males etc. From what I have gathered, I am supposed to assume that I am a carrier of the virus and could infect future sex partners. Am I supposed to assume that I am a carrier for the rest of my life or is it reasonable to think that it would eventually go away? In other words, If I meet my future wife years from now, do i need to tell her that I probably am a carrier of HPV.

You could tell her that you had a positive contact with HPV. HPV can lie dormant in the body for years. Some studies have stated that if a person is symptom free for a year then the chance of the virus being active in the body is very slim. There are symptoms for HPV in males. Flesh colored, non-poppable bumps on the shaft or around the base of the penis. These are not painful and should not itch. If you discover any bumps you should see a doctor for positive diagnosis. HPV is a very common virus. I have added some links for more detailed information:

Reply to James's Post: Based on what I have read recently there are 2 basic subcategories for the sexually transmitted types of HPV. The "low risk" types that cause genital warts and the "High Risk" types that cause cell abnormality increasing risks of differnet cancers. My girlfriend was diagnosed with the latter and not the former. Is it likely for me to have visible symptoms if i am a carrier of the "high risk" virus? If I am healthy, with a strong immuned sytem, how soon could the virus go away completely. It is extemely frustrating not knowing for sure whether I have this.

The risk of cancer pertains to women and even that risk is low with HPV. With either one, you may have symptoms or you may not. The virus will never go away completely but if your immune system is strong enough, it could put the virus in remission forever. Don't worry about this. I know it's easy for me to say that but I have delt with many of these cases in actual patients. Make sure that you watch down there every week for bumps. If any appear, see your doctor. There are creams and other treatments to help these bumps go away.

When it goes into remission you will still have the virus but the chances of you transmitting this to another person are very little if any, according to research.
