my mother has some kind of chronic inflammation of the vulva... over the years some of the raw sores have grown together so that the opening is not as large as it used to be and seems to be getting smaller. she is 85 years old. she has been asking her gynecologist for help with this problem for years but it just gets worse. when she describes the condition to me, it sounds almost like what i have read of Islamic women in Africa who've had their vulva sewn together in places... i am wondering if she needs surgery! i ordered her a herbal cream online and she says that is soothing. she uses it everytime after she urinates to stop the pain... but i am worried about this condition and worried that her doctor has not recommended a more drastic procedure to help her overcome it. thank you, pmontanaro

I am sorry to see you have waited so long for an answer. You mentioned her request for help from her GYN, but not what treatment he provided/prescribed. I would advise against the use of herbal creams or estrogen creams until an actual diagnosis is determined. Though she finds it soothing, it may be aggravating her condition/symptoms. For now I would stick to good hygiene, avoiding all perfumed soaps and powders, and perhaps massaging the area with a small amount of non perfumed, KY self warming lubricant. As to her Physician, if he has not provided a solid reason for these symptoms, and allows her to continue suffering I would change Doctors or at least get a second opinion.   can suggest some underlying causes for these symptoms, but the plain truth is that a Physical exam by a proactive, caring OB/GYN is the only way to truly identify her needs.

Reply to Christy Hammond's Post: thank you for your response.

i am wondering if you have ever heard of a problem like this before as i had not...

i know that my mother has been trying to get help for it from her GYN for some time and i have advised her to ask around for another GYN and try to get another opinion.   i think the first one thought it was just vaginitis, but it seems to me that if the dryness has led to open sores that then grow together thus deforming the area, some intervention more drastic than soothing cream is called for. i jut bought her the herbal cream to tide her over until she could get some real help... by the way, her GYN had prescribed a chemically based estrogen cream whose name i have forgotten.

I agree that she may need more aggressive treatment, and only suggested the lubricant as a comfort measure until she can get another opinion. The attempts to use the Estrogen and/or herbal cream to relieve her symptoms is more than reasonable, but I believe should be held until another Physician can provide a Physical exam, a concrete diagnosis and a treatment plan.
