Mysterious Stomach Ailment

Sent to Health Experts September 23 2006 at 2:15 PM

Around the beginning of August 2006 just after that very hot spell where the temperature was about 104 here in the eastern USA, I was eating some hamburger that probably was very rare.

I suddenly got this weird ‘tingling' sensation that went from left to right at the top of my stomach, right near my ribs. Uh-oh I thought. It was not a pain, but a bubbling sensation.

That night I had a mild feverish feeling and had nightmares. For the next three weeks I had the most foul ‘chemical' smelling softened stools that did not even smell like they came out of a human, stomach cramps in the mid to lower intestine and even a three day bout with throbbing sciatica which finally went away.

Once the ‘bug' traveled through to the lower stomach I thought it was gone but then it seemed to settle back in the upper stomach, causing much distress when I did not eat.

I experienced a serious gnawing sensation way up high, as if something was gripping my stomach where it attached to my esophagus, and even imagined that things were crawling up my throat! I had flatulence, and it felt like I had been kicked in the stomach to the point of passing out at times. I was coughing and could not catch my breath.

Sometimes eating would help and I would feel OK, until the next attack.

I was put on Flagyl which I took for 8 days.
On the third day of the Flagyl, the stranglehold on my alimentary canal was released and I don't have that anymore but it still feels like I have ‘something' in there.

Now that I am off the Flagyl I still have the dull headache, dark circles, exhaustion and ‘tingling' in the belly, which aches when I do not eat. My tongue seems a yellowish-green no matter how much I try to clean it.

About three hours after eating I get terrible stomach distress and weakeness and feel like I will faint. I am very tired and not ‘myself'.

WHAT DO I HAVE and why won't it go away?

A stool sample tested negative for eColi, Salmonella, Shigella, and bleeding but the Giardia test is not back yet after three weeks. Stools smell more normal but are still yellow. I have not eaten much protein.

What else could I have gotten?

In the ER they said all else was well, no organ failures, no appendix or heart troubles or anything. They gave me pepcid for the 'upset stomach' but I think that is just covering up symptoms of something else.

I have never had any type of stomach distress before and can eat anything anytime.

I was asked to 'relist' this question but don't know why. It has not been answered yet.

Basically do people with Giardia have to go through a period of adjustment to let the little hairs in their stomach grow back? Why else would I feel like I had an ulcer? I have to eat an enormous amount of food or be in pain.......

Relist: I still need help.
This is twice now and no one will even attempt to answer the question.

I think I beat the giardia but still have issues I am not happy with. I wonder if there is anything in conjunction with giardia that I could have gotten that would still make me feel like my stomach is tingling and my eyes blackened.

I said I was willing to pay $30 for an answer...so why is no one answering me? Makes me think this website is a scam.

I'm sorry that there has been a delay in getting your question answered. I think this is a very difficult question in terms of trying to place your symptoms together to help make an opinion.

Your symptoms are in line with Giardia and also Peptic Ulcers. In any case, I believe you need an Upper GI test along with an upper GI (gastro intestinal) endoscopy to look for an ulcer or another cause for your symptoms. The blackened eyes and yellowish tongue may be side effects from the Flagyl. The tests that I have recommended will give your doctors a great look at what might be causing your symptoms. I believe your symptoms go more along with peptic ulcers since you say that the pain gets better after you eat. This is a classic textbook sign of peptic ulcers which can cause considerable pain and nausea in some cases. I have added some links for more detailed information:

Reply to James's Post: OK I understand about the peptic ulcer as that is what it is acting like from what I read everywhere. However, please understand that before the sudden onset of this 'bug' at the beginning of August, I never had one single stomach problem in my life!

So this irritation is just since the bug with the fever I had in August.

At first I figured that horrid medicine would have done this but normally, anytime I've aggravated my stomach in the past, the irritation goes away by itself as I have very good stomach health.

My concern now is, they can't find any parasites in the stool I gave them since from before the Flagyl, stool which smelled inhuman, and now stool seems normal, I go every day, but I still have a tingling stomach that flares up with the kicked in the belly feeling, especially in late afternoon.

I still feel like I have 'something' as this is not normal for me!
I am 57 going on 15 as they say! The fear factor is terrible. :-(

(I am a widow and live alone and hate being sick alone, but usually I am never sick especially not stomach problems so this is not easy to tolerate!)

I just want to add that I have been off Flagyl for almost two weeks now. I did feel it working so thought I got rid of the Giardia which I truly feel I had.

What other things could I have 'caught' along with that?

I failed to mention this in my post but added a link to it. H. Pylori is a form of bacteria that could also cause your symptoms. This bacteria hides deep in the stomach and intestine lining and is very hard to treat. You may need another course of the Flagyl or a course of antibiotics depending on how these tests come back. I recommend that you talk to your doctor about an H. Pylori test also.
