Sent to Health Experts September 28, 2006 12:01 p.m.

On the left side of my body I've had tingling and numbness for a short while. It started in my foot and and has traveled to my head - only on the left side. Presently, while I still feel some numbness in my scalp, this thing seems to have really taken hold in my left hand. It feels like my hand is in a bucket of iced water. The feeling, when its present, is mostly in my thumb, little finger, ring finger, index finger and left side of my wrist and muscle coming out from my wrist. Also, the left side of my face, especially my top lip (only on the left side). What could this be?

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Q: Do you get severe headaches also? Any other symptoms you haven't mentioned?

Any history of brain/neck/or back injury?

Thanks for reply,

-Dr. Steve

No, Dr. Steve, no headaches. That is, not until today. I've had one all day today, but its not severe at all. Last Sunday I noticed that my left eye seems to have a dimness and there is a spot that completely blocks facial features and definition in things. My numbness in the left hand is much less uncomfortable but still there. I'm wondering if I might have been bitten by something while walking barefoot in my yard. Again, this thing started in my left foot and travelled up to my scalp. Numbness for a period in every area it travelled through. Only the left side of my upper lip and left hand fingers are still really being effected. But both are much better than before. Could this be headed for my brain? Have you ever heard symptoms like these before? Help!

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy)--you have a very complex set of symptoms. Here is the Differential Diagnosis, based on all the symptoms: [these are all POSSIBLE diagnoses]:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Behçet's syndrome
  • Hypertensive retinopathy
  • Lyme disease (Borrelia spp)
  • Ischemic optic neuropathy
  • Syphilis -- can cause bilateral neuroretinitis
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Lymphoma
  • Leber's idiopathic stellate neuroretinitis
  • Tuberculosis
  • Cryptococcus
  • Leptospirosis
  • Bartonella henselae/B quintana
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Viral infection -- enterovirus, mumps
  • Bacterial/rickettsial infection -- pneumococcus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever
  • Fungal/parasitic infection -- babesiosis (malarial-like illness, anemia: can mimic Lyme)

Unfortunately, there is no simple way to arrive at THE PRECISE diagnosis, without a detailed Physical exam (esp. Neurological exam), Lab workup, and Diagnostic imaging tests (eg-CT scan, MRI). So, I would advise you to see a Neurologist soon, in order to arrive at the exact Dx, so you can get properly treated.

Hope this helps.

Best, -Dr. Steve
