My Husband has had a sharp pain in his upper leg/hip area ...

Sent to Health Experts September 28, 2006 11:06 p.m.

My Husband has had a sharp pain in his upper leg/hip area for about two years. It doesn't hurt all the time. It hurts mostly at night and wakes him up. He has been to Chiropractor after Chiropractor and it has never helped. The only medicine that seems to help is Naproxin Sodium. Any idea what it could be?

REPLIED Check Mark

Your husband has trochanteric bursitis which is a common soft tissue lesion around the hip area. Hip bursitis is commonly seen in runners or athletes who participate in running sports e.g. soccer, football, etc. Trochanteric bursitis is caused by inflammation of the superficial and deep bursae. The inflammation of the bursae produces pain over the trochanteric region in the hip. The pain can be caused by lying on the affected side in bed and may disturb sleep. X-rays show calcification of the bursa in 20% of chronic cases.

Treatment is rest, analgesics e.g. Naproxen, ice, deep tendon massage, and greater trochanteric bursa steroid injections. Early injection of corticosteroid with Xylocaine is the preferred treatment because it is effective with satisfactory duration of effect. I recommend that your husband have his hip examined and treated by an orthopedic specialist. Intra-articular injection of the hip is done using a fluoroscope.
