Within the last four days my left leg (initially after driving and as I stepped down to walk from operating the car) for no apparent reason has a tingling, numbness sort of sensation it does'nt lst but for 20 seconds or so and I notice it happening more after I have been sitting in a car or chair -- I don't necessarily have to get up and begin walking before feeling this sensation. As I write to you now I have that feeling as well. I have noticed over the past few days the level of frequency has increased.

How serious is this? What could this be symptomatic of? I am trying to contact my doctor but very afraid and curious is this the onset of something that will be everlasting or can this be cured.?

HELP with an answer would be most appreciated. Oh -- I am a woman - 48yrs old -- going thru menopause and smoke (with intentions of quitting within 2 months) about 6-7 light short cigs a day.

Reply to Dr AMIT MUNJAL's Post: There is no swelling. I do not have diabetes eventhough there is a family history of it -- my grandmother died with it. My last physical was Jan 2006 -- I have glaucoma and take Timlol drops which I have been doing for at least 5 years. The only other medication is Wellbutrin one tablet a day -- also use a topical steroid to treat lesions on legs but do not use it consistently. Recently took Z-pack to treat a cold -- and have recently taken Mucinex and cough drops.

Regarding back pain, there is some lower back pain that has persisted for many months now -- I have attributed this to a poor supporting mattress which needs to be replaced -- but am beginning to wonder if leg problem could be related to a pinched nerve? My leg almost feels like if you sit in an awkward position cutting off your blood circulation and then stand up -- the sensation is similar to this. Do you think this could be a pinched nerve and if so -- who would handle this type of remedy best -- chiropractor or M.D. -- I prefer M.D.s but I know from experience that Chiropractors are great relieving pinched nerves drug-free?

Hello

Most likely this tingling and numbness is related to pinched nerve .Numbness and tingling are decreased or abnormal sensations caused by altered sensory nerve function. The reason for considering this is increase in symptoms after prolonged sitting in the car or chair. The symptoms arise from short term compression of nerve while sitting in a specific posture(car or chair).

Well you should consult an M.D first to undergo investigations to confirm the diagnosis and also to rule out other causes of peripheral neuropathy .

Reply to Dr AMIT MUNJAL's Post: Thanks for your response -- It has happened so suddenly and I would like to get it dealt with immediately though I know with a chiropractor this is done over many sessions. Question -- can a medical doctor work on pinched nerve? If so is this with medicine or would they refer you to a chiropractor?

Hello

The most frequently recommended treatment for pinched nerve is rest for the affected area. A medical doctor can refer you to a chiropractor or for Physical therapy.

Conventional treatment from medical doctors include painkillers, corticosteriods .
