Iron Supplements & Stool Color Change

Sent to Health Experts October 10 2006 at 2:53 PM

Hello!!

So... I've been on iron supplements for a few months now because I'm anemic; however, I have not been taking them regularly and just started up again religiously.
My stool color has changed, and I feel that it may be because of this. It is now mainly black with a slight green tinge to it... I've heard that a black stool is cause for alarm, but since I'm on iron supplements should I not be alarmed? I have also been quite queasy and faint. I skipped work yesterday because I was so faint I could hardly stand and I felt that at any moment I would vomit. (granted, I never did)
Please advise.

If you suffer from any type of abdominal pain or continue to experience upset stomach and dizziness this could be related to your intestional tract and could be colitis so it is something that should be further evaluated. With iron suppliments it is more common for the bowel and urine movements to create and odor similar to the iron smell of the suppliment but is not overly common with changing the color of the bowel movements especially if you have not been taking them regular. A black stool is usually an indication of blood in the upper intestional track and with you being anemic it is something I would have looked into and with the additonal symptoms that you are experiencing it sounds more related to your intestinal tract or colon then it does to the iron suppliments you are taking.
