question about weightlifting
Sent to Health Experts October 16 08:39 AM

when i work out, bench press for instance or rows, i hear a click/pop in my left shoulder. it does NOT hurt and has been there for many years, as long as i can remember. I am 27 (male ) and want to continue working out for the rest of my life--i love it. i just want to be safe. what is happening in there? ami wearing away cartilage? does this sound normal. or is as it is with most health-related things: only someone like me (a hypochondriacal nut, lol) notices. PLEASE SEND THE ANSWER TO MY OTHER EMAIL ADDRESS: XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX. THE ONE YOU'LL HAVE IS NOT ACCESSABLE TO ME WHERE I AM. JLF

Optional Information:
Male , Age: 27

Already Tried:
restricting movement limiting the range: when i bench i dont bring the weight all the way down, that seems to work, but not always--very distracting with heavey weight. but i can make my shoulder click just by moving it around

Hi,
The clicking sound in the shoulder with other symptoms of pain etc. is not much to worry about. This is due to the laxity of the various ligaments and the shoulder capsule. Only thing toi keep in mind is that your this shoulder might be at a risk of injury or displacement as compared to other one. You have to be careful while exercising. No sudden jerks or movements should be done. Rest you can continue exercising.

Reply to Gaurav Gupta's Post: the thing is that i can make it click/pop anytime. what is the source of that sound? ie is cartilage being worn away.? when i work out i dont jerk, ever. its just something that always happens. does that mean that my shoulder is some how internally malformed? that everntually it will need to be fixed, or is this just "one of those things".. i must let you know that i have a diagonsed anxiety disorder, so i am obseessed with the future. im sure you understand. its about reassurance. thank you. JLF

Hi,
Your shoulder does not need to be fixed neither is it malformed. Laxatity menas that the ligaments of your shoulder joint are a little relaxed as compared to the other one. There is no need to worry. Carry on your normal routine of exercise. Just don't jerk this shoulder often.
