PLEASE HELP - possible pregnancy
Sent to Health Experts October 16 10:46 PM

My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex the day before I started my new pack of pills (Friday, September 30). We used the withdrawal method. Do you think there is a chance I could be pregnant? My body reacts strangely to the pill - some months, I still ovulate. My ovulation date would have been last Monday, October 9. I feel so bloated - my stomach seems to be "hard" and much more extended than usual. My breasts also seem heavier, but they are not sore at all. I have history of ovarian cysts - could these be symptoms of another one forming? PLEASE HELP - I am really starting to worry. I took a pregnancy test two days ago, and it was negative, but I am afraid it was too early to get an accurate result.

The withdrawl method has a very high failure rate, as even though ejaculation may not have occurred, pre-ejaculate could have been present which has as much chance of causing pregnancy. If you had intercourse on Sept 30th and ovulation occurred around October 9th, this would be a slim to nil chance of pregnancy occurring, as sperm can only live up to 3 days once ejaculated. It's possible that your symptoms could be side effects from the pill, a cyst, or pregnancy, or a combination. The best time to test for pregnancy is at least two weeks after a missed period, so at this point it would be too early to tell.

Reply to Annie's Post: I really don't think I could be pregnant, but I am still worried. I had a cyst about six months ago, and I'm trying to remember the symptoms I felt...I think it's pretty much the same way I'm feeling now. Am I wrong to assume that there are just too many odds against being pregnant? (On the pill, sex didn't happen near ovulation, didn't ejaculate inside me...)

lizzylou882,

If sex didn't happen near ovulation, then there would be no chance of pregnancy. The pill is not 100% effective against pregnancy, so it can still occur- only abstinence is 100% effective. As stated above, with what you describe the chances would be extremely low to nil that you could be pregnant. I would still get tested to deny pregnancy though. Symptoms of a cyst would include abdominal pressure, fullness, or pain, dull ache in the lower back and thighs, nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, weight gain, and pain during sex.

Reply to Annie's Post: I'm pretty much having all of those symptoms - except for vomiting and pain during sex. My stomach/abdomen feels very hard - like someone is pressing on it. It's also sore when you press on it. My breasts aren't sore, just heavier than usual - I feel like I notice them more. My lower back does hurt more than usual. The reason I think it may be another cyst is because in addition to all the above symptoms, I have pain near my ovary on the left side. It feels like extreme menstrual cramps, but localized. I'm sorry about my worrying. I guess since I still occasionally ovulate on the pill, I just get nervous!
