Two days ago i felt a Knot on the center of my right shin and pain if any pressure is applied, Yesterday no change in the pain, but the knot is almost disapeared. still only hurt when pressure is applied. Today, still have no knot but the pain, associated with pressure is now running from the origional location to bbout 1 inch over my anckle parallel to the shin bone just to the inside.

Their is no muscle pain when i move my anckle or leg, no pain associated, with wakling, no redness it the affected area, and have not hit my leg with on any objects.

Suggestions? Should i be concerned or should i continue to monitor for a few more days?

Hi,
By the symptoms you are describing there are two possibilities in your case -

  • Shin splits - This occurs due to injury of the anterior muscle while jumping or running. This can be acute or delayed onset. As you donot recall doing some exercise in the last 2-3 days, then it can be delayed onset i.e. might have occured due to some sudden jerk or activity 6-7 days back. In this the muscle becomes sore with mild localised swelling. Treatment is basically rest to the affected leg and take anti-inflammatories like Tylenol/Mortin. Hot fomentation to the local area can also be applied.
  • Periostitis - This is the inflammation of the Priosteum (covering layer of the bone) due to a stress fracture or some tumor in the bone. This is diagnosed on X-ray and if required CT scan.

I would advise you to take rest for 2-3 days, take pain killers and apply hot fomentation to the affected area. If it is a shin split then it should heal. If it does not heal or the symptoms worsen then you need to consult an Orthopedecian to rule out other causes like Periostitis.
