I had an abortion on Friday Oct 6th 2006,I was six weeks pregnant when I got the abortion,I had the surgical vaccuum procedure,it has been a little over a week and I am still feeling pregnancy symptoms.I'm very tired I feel week and sick,My breast are tender and I am urinating frequently.I also took a pregnany test a week and one day later and it came out positive.I've had a baby before and I am experiencing the same symptoms now that I did when i was pregnant then.I don't remeber the procedure as I was heavily sedated and no one,but the nurse and doctor were present in the room.Is there a possibility that i could still be pregant? How long after an abortion does it take for a pregnancy test to show up negative, and for pregnancy symptoms to go away?

Hello,

The pregnancy test should have showed up negative within 3-4 days. The pregnancy symptoms can remain for some time as they could be due to other causes also.

If your pregnancy test has come back positive after a week of the abortion, then it is likely that :

A. The test is showing a false positive result.

B. You are still pregnant.

C. You are suffering from a condition called Hydatidiform mole or Molar Pregnancy.

D. You are suffering from a condition called choriocarcinoma.

Please contact your doctor again and ask for an ultrasonogram and blood tests for the level of the HCG hormone for an accurate diagnosis.

I hope this helps.

Hello,

Molar Pregnancy and Choriocarcinoma are conditions where the level of the hormone HCG increases and are detected by the pregnancy test.

In you case, I think that you are still pregnant. The surgical vacuum procedure is not always successful and the pregnancy in some women may remain intact - which is what, I believe, has happened to you.

Please contact your doctor and ask for an ultrsonogram. this will show you how many weeks pregnant you are and that the pregnancy is still in place and growing.

I hope this helps.
