What is a helpful treatment for excema?

My 4 year old daughter suffers from severe excema. I've taken her to the pediatrician and dermatologist over the last two years, hoping they will give us something new to control her outbreaks. We've tried Avene emollient cream, emollient bath and spray, Eucerin calming cream, Protopic ointment, Cutivate, Elidel, Locoid Lipocream, and I am currently using Desonide Cream which the Pediatrician perscribed as a solution to a burning problem she gets when she has flare-ups and scratches herself raw in her sleep. Then putting these other creams on the raw spots was causing so much burning and pain to her. I also just started something new called Derma-smoothe/FS oil. As you can see I am very frusterated that none of these creams seem to really help my daughter. Is there any other treatments you recomend and/or preventative solutions to her excema problem?
Sincerely,

Peggy Oakes

Hi peggy

I am sorry to hear you doughter is in such discomfort.
Recently the Food and Drug Administration approved a cream called Atopiclair. This is a nonsteroida cream, therefore you may be able to use it for longer periods of time. This is the website, you may find more information there; www.atopiclarus.com.
Also what you may try is a bath with dead sea salts. Just dissolve the salt in warm water and let your doughter sit in it for a few minutes. You may do this 3 to 4 times a week. A lot of patients with eczema tend to find this helpful. Just make sure that the sea salts you are using are from the Dead Sea.

I hope this helps, if you have any further questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Hi Peggy

I would suggest paying attention or even keeping a diary to what your daughter eats and the effect it has on her skin. This may help more in determining what specific food may aggravate her eczema. Potentially provoking foods include peanuts, milk, soy, fish, and eggs. Foods high in saturated fats like meat and full fat dairy product such as milk and cheese and trans-fatty acids such as fried foods may cause more inflammation as might sugar. On the other hand, fresh fruits especially dark berries, and vegetables, whole grains, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as nuts, flax, seeds, and fish may reduce inflammation and therefore help .

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 fatty acid. Studies with GLA are mixed, however there is some evidence that patients with eczema, have low levels of GLA. Several early studies done recently suggested that GLA derived from evening primrose oil is beneficial for relieving symptoms associated with eczema. Given you daughter’s age I would consults her pediatrician before you give her any supplements.

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions don’t hesitate to ask.
