My heel has been hurting all day. What would cause the pain?

My left heel started hurting mid-afternoon. I had worn shoes I have worn before and have not had problems with them. There is no pain in the right heel. It actually started after I took the shoes off. Also, I was doing a minimum amount of standing in the shoes. What can I do for the pain? Advil? Thank you.
