Sent to Health Experts July 27 12:09 PM

Small framed Asian woman in Los Angeles drinks 1 gallon of water a day.
She doesn't exercise or sweat very much.Is this too much water? What are any dangerous side-effects? Is there anything she can do to avoid such side-effects if she still wants to drink so much water? Thank you!

Hello,

Drinking 1 gallon of water is too much for anyone.

It can lead to a condition known as 'water toxicity'. This is a condition when too much water is absorbed into the blood leading to a relative decrease in the level of electrolytes These will cause body cells to draw in water and swell up. This swelling can cause an irregular heart beat, fluid in the lungs. In the brain the swollen cells can put pressure on the nerves. There may be symptoms like dizzyness, difficulty in maintaining balance, slurred speech, blurred vision. Thre may even be seizures, coma and ultimately death.
