HELP! My beautiful 17 year old daughter has alot of dark ...

HELP! My beautiful 17 year old daughter has alot of dark facial hair. It started on her lip and has now moved to the sideburn area all the way down to under her chin (like a beard). She had her lip waxed twice but, when the other facial hair was coming in, I thought a more drastic solution was needed. I took her to a dermatologist who does laser hair removal. Expensive, but if it worked I will find the money. He did blood tests to make sure it wasn't a hormonal problem and they all came back normal. On our last visit there he used a disposable razor which I felt would make the hair come back coarser (like shaving your legs). He ASSURED me it wouldn't but, when I kissed her goodnight last night, I could feel a very fine stubble. I don't know what to do next. Is there another kind of doctor who can help her. I am so hopeful that you can provide us with some answers and suggestions. My daughter's skin is basically fair (but she tans well) she has blue eyes and brown hair.

Hello,

This type of excessive hair growth is called hirsutism. It is usually a result of a hormonal problem like excesive androgens (male hormones) and a high insulin level. Hirsutism can also occur due to increased sensitivity of the hair follicles to normal levels of androgen.

Some of the common causes which cause an increase androgen level are polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), Cushing's disease or tumors in the ovaries or adrenal glands. Other symptoms of a high male hormone level are deepening of voice, increased acne and increased muscle mass.

If your daughter is on the heavy side and has irregular periods, there is a fair chance that she is suffering from PCOS.

If your dermatologist has not done blood ests for androgen or insulin level, please ask him to do so. Your daughter will also need an ultrasound to help diagnose PCOS.

If your daughter really has hormonal problems, treatment should prevent further growth of hair. But the hair which has already grown will need laser treatment to be removed.

If your daughter's hormonal levels are all right, then laser treatment is the only treatment which will cause a permanent cure for her hirsutism.

I hope this helps.

Reply to Dr.M.D.Mazumdar, MD's Post: What about the part where I told you they used a razor on her face. Do you agree with me that if they do that it will make the facial hair (both light and dark) grow back coarser or do you think it is ok for them to use it. I know I felt a fine stubble on her face last night.
