Question

What is going on when my hands fall asleep while I'm sleepin

Sent to Health Experts November 05, 2007 3:33 p.m.

I've noticed that some times at night while sleeping, either one or both of my hands have fallen asleep with tingling sensations. Is that normal?

Hello,

It is likely that you have a spinal disc herniation or prolapse in the upper back. The prolapsed disc can compress or pinch the nerves supplying the hands causing them to go to sleep or to cause numbness or a tingling sensation.

Lying down make the muscles and ligaments become more relaxed, increasing the degree of herniation and making the symptoms pronounced.

You need to consult an orthopedist for an xray and a CT scan for an accurate diagnosis.

I hope this helps.
