My girl friend has just had an ultrasound on a buldging artery just above the collar bone and it has been diagnosed as a Tortuous Prominant Artery. We would like to know what usually causes this and what the health consequences could be with this sort of thing.

Reply to Dr. D. Evans's Post: Its the one that one would normally use to detect a pulse just above the collar bone. Not sure what the proper name of it.

She is having kinking of the carotid artery.

This is nothing to worry about. This is something which is present in many of us. It is not of clinical significance and does not pose any danger. Only in some individuals, it can cause a symptom in which the patient has dizziness in certain positions of the head. This is fairly rare, in almost all people in whom this is found there are no symptoms and it does not need any treatment.

Reply to Dr. D. Evans's Post: Thank you so much for such a speedy reply. I guess one of our concerns is whether or not there is any risk of an aneurysm. She noticed the prominance about a year ago but, over the last two weeks it became very prominant. So, naturally, with such a sudden change in appearance, concerns were raised. Of course, she will be following up with her family doctor but, is common for such prominances to change appearance from time to time?
Please accept both our thanks for your expert comments and I plan to gladly accept your reply.
Thanks agin
