I've had a GERD problem for the last 3 years as well as esophagitus. My throat is always irritated and many times I get a burning/feeling in my throat and I have trouble swallowing rough or crispy foods because it hurts. Anyway thats not my question, just some background. My question is that this week i decided to start eating healthier by reducing my portions and eating more vegetables and fruits. What happened is my throat has been bothering me a lot more since i started this, especially in the mornings. Just a constant burning all day but it gets better at night. I assumed more frequent meals and veggies would be better or my GERD but it seems thats not the case. Why?

Optional Information:
Male, Age: 29, California

Already Tried:
Nexium 40mg daily

Reply to Dr.D. Saha's Post: My GERD symptoms are worst when i'm upright.

I took a Bravo PH test that showed i have virtually no reflux when i'm asleep. I take Nexium about 30 minutes before my lunch.

I don't have any cough but my throat gets irritated sometimes and i end up taking a cough drop for it.

I don't smoke or drink.

I can't remember when the burning in the throat started but its been quite a while, maybe a year. Three years ago the original symptoms were that i was having a hard time being able to burp and I ended up having to vomit for relief. This would happen once in a while but then it started happening more frequently. I also started getting heartburn once or twice a week. I haven't had any more heartburn since then but i continue to have problems with this. I've had 2 or 3 endoscopies and 2 upper GI floroscopies but they show nothing. The Bravo PH test showed that I have a lot of acid reflux.

I thought the same thing but my GI doctor told me its becoming more and more common to have upright GERD symptoms. He has told me that more than once. i have been eating bananas, flax seed, blueberries, olives, mushrooms and aspharagus. Do any of those tend to cause problems?

the strange thing is that it was bothering me all day but then i had a chocolate pie and i felt much better.

When you say alginate containing antacid, do you mean something like Gaviscon?

To some people Cabbage, Cucumber, Beans, Radish, Citrous fruit, Milk may produces symptoms.
If you feel Chocolate donot harm, no need to avoid, but take less fatty food.
There is no one specific diet that will prevent all symptoms of GERD.
The only way to design a meal plan appropriate for you is to discover which foods you tolerate well and which foods aggravate your reflux.
Keep a detailed diet record for one week.
Your food record should have three column: food, time of day and symptoms.
Write all of the foods and beverages that you take each day.
Once you have identified those “trigger” foods you can modify your diet to help alleviate any symptoms.
yes, Gaviscon 20ml 2 hours after food you can take 3 times daily along with daily Nexium.
