Nodules are commonly seen in the thyroid, and are most likely benign cysts or adenomas.
However, a minority of them do have the potential to be cancerous (about 5% of them), so given this, your doctors will have to determine 1) what the likelihood of them being potentially cancerous is, and 2) determining if a fine-needle biopsy or excisional biopsy is needed for diagnosis.
The questions to ask:
1) Do you think they are cancerous?
2) How do we follow up on this?
3) Do I need a biopsy?
4) What other tests will I need (further ultrasound, blood tests for thyroid function)?
