My wife has just discovered she has two noodles in her throat from an ultra sound examination. Going in for Dr. appointment next Thursday, questions or actions she should discuss with her Dr.

Ultra sound done on the neck Dr. thought it was arthritis, found soft tissue around it. Thought it was thryoid puffing up on quivical valve. Discovered two nodules on thryoid.

OK.

Nodules are commonly seen in the thyroid, and are most likely benign cysts or adenomas.

However, a minority of them do have the potential to be cancerous (about 5% of them), so given this, your doctors will have to determine 1) what the likelihood of them being potentially cancerous is, and 2) determining if a fine-needle biopsy or excisional biopsy is needed for diagnosis.

The questions to ask:

1) Do you think they are cancerous?
2) How do we follow up on this?
3) Do I need a biopsy?
4) What other tests will I need (further ultrasound, blood tests for thyroid function)?
