I went to my GP about 4 months ago. I had a visibly swollen throat in the center around the adam's apple area. He said it was brochitis. He gave me antibiotics. It made my throat stop hurting and the swelling(very slightly) go down. Here is is 4 months later and my throat is still very visibly swollen. It seems to be slightly different every day as far as the amount of swelling. TOday it is pretty big. And if I press on it orun my hand over it too much it starts hurting a bit. It is very hard also. Is this bronchitis or something more serious? Could I have bronchitis for over 4 months?

Hello -

It is bronchitis or pharyngitis? Bronchitis will give you a cough and sore lungs.

When you say you press your hand on it, do you mean the front of your neck? There are numerous lymph nodes there and they are likely very enlarged.

Lymph nodes enlarge when there is an infection. When touching an enlarged lymph node, they likely will be sore.

My thought is that the antibiotic was the incorrect one to battle the bacteria you currently have - given that it is a bacteria. It likely is bacteria due to the redness but viral infections can do that as well. Nothing is concrete.

It may be prudent for the doctor to do a throat swab and culture it. This way the lab will be able to determine the exact bacteria and virus. Then the lab will also test numerous antibiotics on what they found and report that to the doctor. It is called a culture and sensitivity test. That should be done.

This day in age, there are many new strains that are not being killed with the most common antibiotics - so others must be used.

Do you have a high temperature? Do you see any white or yellow discharge by your tonsils?

Are you a smoker? If so, stop smoking if you can - at least until this is over.

How old are you?

I would proceed to the hospital or clinic and get the throat swab - with culture and sensitivity.
