If you are coughing up sputum then you need to stop the cough suppressants. All they do is stop the cough reflex for a bit and the body has to fight harder to get the phlegm up.

You dont mention how long you have had it but in the short term I would recommend the following:

Steam inhalations two or three times daily to loosen up the mucus and moisten the throat.
Syrup based cough mixture or lozenge again to lubricate the throat.
An expectorant (guiphenesin) which may help loosen up mucus and make it easier to shift.
Decongestant tablets if the nose is involved.

After three days of this, if phlegm is coloured yellow or green then pop down to your doctor. If the blood becomes copious ie not just in with the sputum then pop down sooner to your doctor.

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids, take vitamin C and echinacea may help boost your immune system.

Hope this helps. Please remember to click accept if so.
