I have been diagnosed with acute tonsillitis.

I have been diagnosed with acute tonsillitis. Initially I had pain and swelling on the left side of my throat and neck. Yesterday I was feeling better. When I woke up this morning, the pain and swelling had relocated to the right side. Is this normal?

I have been taking keflex (?), an antibiotic, I've been resting for the last 4 days, and I have been taking ibuprofen and drinking lots of fluids as well. I saw a doctor two days ago, and he anticipated that I would be able to return to work today. Unfortunately that is not the case. I believe he was a quack. He actually wrote on my report "maybe strep" Last time I checked, people were supposed to do a throat culture to check for that!! Ah well, that's what I've done so far.

Hello

There are some viruses going around where a severe sore throat is a symptoms and it can last up to two weeks. That being said, you may also want to return to the doctor for a throat culture, although it may be masked since you've been taking the Keflex.

I'm not sure the doctor is a quack either, as it takes some guessing to practice medicine at times. It's hard to distuinguish between an infection and a virus at times as well.

A virus will also be more likely to switch sides as you describe.

Strept would effect both sides.

Hope that helps,

Kerry
