Question

throat issue

Sent to Health Experts June 18, 2006 6:59 p.m.

I have a strange "clicking" or sticking sensation on my right side when i swallow. seems to be high in my throat near my epiglottis. It occurs more when i turn my head away from that side to swallow and less when i turn into it. there is no pain it is just an irritating feeling. could i have a torn epiglottis or possibly a nodule interfering with function?

Hello,

I would make an appointment with an ENT (Ear, nose & throat) specialist for a laryngeal computed tomographic (CT) scan to rule out thyroid-cartilage and/or vertebral body asymmetry. Spme people have thyroid or larynx cartilage causing the clicking.

An ENT can determine if this is actually causing the clicking. Normally, this is just annoying and of no seriousness and has no further complications.

If it is too annoying or becomes painful, although uncommon, the clicking throat is a surgically treatable problem as the cartilage can be trimmed as a minor outpatient procedure.
