There are some importnat things to consider about a child who gets recurrent strep throats. Over 5 or 6 infections in a couple of years, often leads to removal of the tonsils. Has this been discussed as an option?
To investigate the reason why so many infections, I would request a full blood and differential white cell count be done to check that his immune system is functioning within normal ranges.
The throat swab should be cultured to check that the bacteria is fully sensitive to the antibiotic. Once the antibiotic is started a typical length of treatment in a recurrent patient should be ten days to ensure that no residual bacteria are left in place.
Sometimes the reason for recurrent episodes is due to repeated reinfection from the environment especially crowded schools, large family settings etc although it is difficult to know how to remove this as a problem without making drastic changes to lifestyle.
It may be useful to reswab after completion of the antibiotic course to ensure bacteria has been eradicated however a blood test for strep antibiotic both during and after an episode could indicate whether he is a strep carrier, and the reason for recurrent infections is that the bacteria take over when his immune system is low.
Taking recurrent antibiotics can reduce his normal 'friendly' bacteria and make it easier for repeated infections to take over. It is really important to ensure that he eats plenty of fruit and vegetables in order to maintain a healthy immune system.
