Question

Severe throat problem

Sent to Health Experts July 09, 2006 3:36 p.m.

Hello. I have a question about how to deal with a severe sore throat problem. About two days ago, more specifically about 39 hours ago, I got symptoms of the flu. For a while, the biggest problem was a fever, headache, and sore throat, but now the first two have subsided. I took two pills of Sudafed PE every 6 hours and everything seemed to be turning around. However, since last night totoday, my sore throat has gotten pretty severe to the point where I don't want to swallow because it hurts so much. I tried everything to help it (Halls, Sudafed, hot flu and sore throat tea, regular tea with honey, gargling warm salt water which I could barely do, and just about everything else). I tried calling some hospitals to get some help but they said they couldn't help me because they could barely understand me. I can't eat hardly anything or even drink anything now and want to know if there is something else I can do or if this severe sore throat has become something else like streph throat?

Jeff,

You have done a great job by treating yourself with over the counter meds but with your symptoms now, I would say it is best to see a doctor. You need to rule out strep throat now so this can be treated if it is. The doctor can test this by using a swab culture and sending it to the lab. The treatment, if it is strep, will be antibiotics. At this point, you have done everything that you can do to treat yourself. If left untreated, strep can cause heart problems later in life. If this answer helps please hit the accept button. Thank you.

Thank you for your help. My only question now is since it is Sunday and most health clinics are closed, should I go to the emergency room?
