I have a cold, with sore throat , mild sinus congestion. Recently, I have had extremely red, watery eyes, with a thick yellow discharge. It has been like that all day, without sign of getting better. I have taken 2 benedryl with no results. I have no allergies that I am aware of.

Reply to Pam's Post: Are you running any fever? <answer>I am currently not running a fever. I may have run a slight fever earlier this week, but nothing significant.

Do you have any white patches or spots in the back of your throat? I have not noticed any white patches.

Are you on any medications? If so what are they? <answer>The only medications that I have taken are Advil cold and sinus and Chloraseptic lozenges.

When you wake up in the mornings, do your eyes seem matted over? They do have yellow discharge? <answer>Yes they seem matted over wake up and they currently have a yellow discharge. Both eyes. They are very blodshot. Slightly puffy and very watery, tearing to the point of overflow, I feel like I am crying.. but not.

Are you allergic to any medications? <answer>None that I am aware of.

Thank you for answering my questions. As far as the cold and sore throat, you can treat with Advil cold and the other medications that you have. You may want to add tylenol to that because advil is ibuprofen which is usually just for aches and pains. Tylenol is for fever if you are running any. If you start seeing white patches or little blisters on the back of your throat, this could mean you have a bacterial infection such as strep, and you will need to get antibiotics for that. Only time will tell about whether your eyes have a bacterial or viral infection. If it is viral, it will go away on its own. If it is bacterial it will not go away, and again you are going to need some antibiotic drops. We will see if it is viral first. Use some cold compresses on your eyes. You may switch out and put warm compresses and see which ones feel better.

You cannot use a compresses on both eyes. You have to have a separate compresses for both eyes, just in case this is bacterial and it is contagious. Be sure to wash your hands frequently and do not rub one eye and then touch the other one without washing your hands first. If this is bacterial it will be contagious. If it is viral it won't be. You may want to change your pillow cases often as well. In a few days you will know what it is. If it is getting better then it will be viral. If it is not any better in a couple of days you will need to be seen by a physician for antibiotic eye drops.

Sorry, on this case you have to eliminate things before you can figure out what it is. I hope I have answered your question. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask, that is what I am here for.
