My husband has had a horrible cough for the past three weeks. He feels that he has a lot of congestion, but mostly it is non-productive cough. Some of these coughing spells have lasted upwards of ten minutes, and have left him gasping for air. Today he noticed that along with phlegm, he is now spitting up blood. Is this anything that he should have looked at by his doctor, or is it just because he had been coughing so much?

Yes he does need to be seen by a doctor but I wouldn't fret over the blood just yet. In most cases where a person coughs a lot, they can break tiny blood vessels in the throat causing specks of blood mixed in with phlegm. Your husband needs to see a doctor Monday morning. Hopefully this is just viral illness but with a cough of 3 weeks and how bad he is coughing, this may be pneumonia or bronchitis. Make sure the doctor orders a chest x-ray. Your husband will likely be placed on antibiotics. If he is having trouble breathing right now you may need to take him to the ER for treatment such as nebulizer to help his breathing. Tylenol will be good to bring down any temperature that he has also.
I wish you the best of luck and please let me know what the doctor says.
