Do I have to take an antibiotic for tonsilitis if I have no fever?

I have just gotten over bronchitis with antibiotics but now have pain in the tonsil. Do I have to take antibiotics (avelox) if I dont have a fever?

The only reason to need an antibiotic for the tonsillitis is if it is strep. this is proven by culture. If you don't have a strep throat, then the antibiotics would not be needed for the tonsillitis. You may, however, require the antibiotics for your bronchitis

Reply to S. Sarisky DO.'s Post: I dont have bronchitis now I recovered from that with antibiotics. So your saying I do not need to take a heavy duty antibiotic for my tonsil (it is only on one side)it will go away in time?

I would question your doctor as to what bacteria he is treating with this antibiotic, it is never a good idea to just stop a prescribed medication. Your doctor may have a very good rationale behind this new prescription. I only treat culture proven strep infection of the throat with an antibiotic. Your doctor may be covering you 'just to be on the safe side' - but I would ask the rationale. Let me know what comes of this - take care
