My mom is on a vent. For some reason when we move her say to turn her in bed, or to move her in a geri chair, she tenses up and her rate goes high into the 40's. Why does this happen?

Hello

Is she able to communicate? It could be that she gets scared and doesn't feel secure when she is moved. If you can tell me more about her condition, I might be able to give you more possibilities.

She has a strok back in Nov. of 03. There was very little damage. She was able to communicate with us until May 1 of this year. That is when things went south. We thought it was just a low sodium problem, which it was - sodium was 118. She spent 18 days in the hospital. She got outbut had to go back in 4 days later due to low sodium again.

She was out for a week, but then had a UTI and back in to the hospital for 7 days. Got out for 7 days, then she got sepsis. She recovered from that and was ready to come home July 9. But on July 6 they said she aspirated and that is when she went on the vent. They didn't really try to wean her, so she had a trach. Now her rate only goes high and she hasn't been able to wean.

What can be done to start the weaning process?

She is currently in a Long Term Acute Hospital - Kindred Hospital in Ontario. She is receiving breathing treatments every 4 hours. I asked them to start her off at pressure support of 20 then go down from there. But they said pressue support of 17-20 is not really weaning. But wouldn't that be a start towards strengthing her lung muscles? Then after a few days lower it and keep working at it?

I asked the pulmonary dr. about starting at 20 then working down. She is the one who said about the 17-20. But I feel she is wrong. How can I get them to change her mind & try my way? Should I ask for another Dr.? Physical therapy is sitting her up for an 1hr-1 1/2 hr 3 times a week. And her rate is between 18 - 24. which is good for her. I believe this helps build her lung muscles.

Thank you sooo much for being here. I really feel that the drs. are not really listening to me because I am the family and what do I know about medicine. I feel like I am the only one trying to heal her. I will keep you posted.
