Hello Customer (name blocked for privacy)
It is very possible that you could have a severe cold, an infection in your throat such as strep throat, or a sinus infection. You can even have a stomach virus or the vomiting could just be from the headache.
Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus and once you have it the virus stays in your body for life. A person will normally not get mono again but indeed other things can cause similar symptoms. Other illnesses such as strep throat and influenza can cause symptoms similar to mono and the only way to accurately diagnose the problem is to see your doctor.
There are some concerns that you should think about. Anytime someone presents with a severe headache, usually reported as 'the worst headache in my life' then they should immediately be evaluated. If you have a fever over 102 and any associated neck pain then it is imperative that you get to a doctor right away.
If the headache was relieved by over the counter medications then it was most likely related to the underlying illness. Strep throat can be treated with antibiotics and a throat culture should be preformed. Unfortunately if it is influenza antibiotics will not work. A severe sinus infection can cause horrible headaches.
Although it is impossible to get a definitive diagnosis without an examination from a doctor there are some things you can do to help you feel better until you can get an appointment. Over the counter cold medications can help alleviate some of the symptoms.
If it is the flu the most important things to watch for are high fever, sharp pains when you breathe deeply or a cough that brings up excessive phlegm. If you do end up with bacterial pneumonia you will need an antibiotic.
Important things to consider with a sore throat and when to seek medical attention are a sore throat that lasts more than 2 days, swollen lymph glands, A sore throat that is not accompanied by a runny nose or cold, joint pain or any difficulty breathing.
It is strongly recommended that anyone who has had mono and exhibits symptoms of mono again be seen by a doctor. Although it is unlikely that another episode of mono is occurring there are other things that can mimic mono and without a thorough examination from your doctor it is difficult to tell.
I hope you feel better soon and if at any time you get a headache that can be described as the worst headache of your life then please go to your doctor or an emergency room. The same goes for a high fever that is not alleviated with over the counter fever medications.
Good luck and if you have any further questions please let me know.
Sincerely,
Bunny
