Question

I had a test done for my thyroid in Nov. the TSH 3rd

Sent to Health Experts January 17 11:35 a.m.

I had a test done for my thyroid in Nov. the TSH 3rd generation and my level was .83, which is normal. Just had another one done on Fri. called TSH 3rd generation with reflex to FT4. The TSH was .36 (low as the range is 0.4 to 5.0) but the Free T4 was 1.3 (normal). Do I have hyperthyroid? Will I need treatment?

Dear Jocelyn,

are you experiencing any symptoms of hyperthyroidism: anxiety, sweating, palpitations, diarrhea, tremor, weight loss?

or hypothyroidism: fatigue, weight gain, swelling?

Occasional palpitations where I can feel my heart beat but the rate is usually about 74-77 even when I feel it. No other symptoms...no weightloss/gain or anything else listed. They were running tests as part of routine.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Dear Jocelyn,

based on what you told me and your lab tests I feel that you are probably fine. I doubt that your palpitations are from hyperthyroidsim. Your TSH is only slightly low (if I saw that with a normal T4, I'd blame it on lab error). Your T4 is normal and that is what really matters. Since you are asymptomatic , there really isn't a role for medications even if the T4 was abnormal either. 3rd gen and rT4 aren't really helpful since your TSH isn't that low.
I recommend you just keep an eye out for the development of either of the patterns above, but in the meantime, don't worry to much about it.

Good Luck,

Dr.J
