I am a 39 year old male. My problem/question is I only weigh 117 pounds yet eat fine. I cannot put on any weight. Drinks like Ensure do not agree with me. What can I do, and is there a reason for this that can be corrected?

First I would have a full blood work up. Make sure your thyroid is working properly, check for sugar etc.. Even if these labs come back in the normal range and are in a high or low normal, I would see an endocrinologist for further followup, you may still have a problem even though it comes up normal. Especially if you are unable to gain any weight.

Reply to Lindie's Post: I have had blood done checking for diabetes and it came back normal. Taking this into consideration, is the test you refer to different? You mention I may still have a problem, and since I am not putting on weight, especially at this age, what problem would that be and how is it corrected? I really apreiciate any info on this problem you can give me. It is a very personal and worrisome condition for me.

Thyroid has no bearing on a sugar test Hun. So do request your thyroid to be checked along with hormone levels as well. If they should come back in the normal range, including your sugar test that you did have done.. was it in the low or high range of normal? If so it still could be sugar related. I would be more incline to think thyroid/hormone. If you want to go further in depth rather than just your standard blood work from a family doctor, see an endocrinologist. They specialize in all of the above as well. It may have to do with how your body absorbs fats etc.. but without a full blood work up which is where you need to start is hard to say what is going on. Of course worst case scenario could be cancer.. But before thinking that and if you want to get to the bottom of this, see an endocrinologist..

Hope this helps Hun
