Sent to Health Experts September 22, 2006 10:50 p.m.

My husband is almost 30 yrs about 5'10 225. basical good health as far as we know. He does pipefitter work at a plant. He came home from work today feeling very bad no fever pulse 106 ,pressure 135 over 86. He says his body feels like it has a sun burn all over(he doesnt have a sun burn) his very face is red eyes are glassy. He said its not like what you feel before getting the flu or somthing. His hands swell often. Should we be concered or can this wait a few weeks until he gets off overtime?

I do not see his condition as one that can wait. While there are several benign possibilities (allergic reaction to a chemical from work, anxiety attack related to the stress of overtime, a lingering reaction to an attack of low blood sugar...) There are conditions (for ex. disorders of thyroid or kidney disorders, new onset diabetes...)which require immediate intervention. Even if he attempts to wait out the O.T., he may end up losing work if this episode repeats or continues. He could also be in danger if he doesn't identify the source of these symptoms and they progress to dizziness, or even loss of consciousness while he is driving or working. His safest option is to schedule and immediate examination (if he has a good family Doctor) or to be seen in Emergency or at an Urgent Care within the next 24 hours. they can do some preliminary blood work, an EKG, and test his urine for signs of kidney disorder, infection, and signs of diabtes or hypoglycemia.

In the meantime conyinue the hydration and a light snack as tolerated, apply a cool compress to forehead and pulse points, have him control his breathing, taking 12-15 deep breaths per minute, (if this is difficult have him breath into a paper bag for several minutes). Give hime two Ibuprofen and two regular OTC Benadryl. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory, andthe Benadryl will address the possibility of an allergic response. The Benadryl will not harm him, even if there is no histamine reaction involved. If the Benadryl provides any relief, and he delays seeking treatment overnight, repeat the Benadryl, Ibuprofen and compresses in four hours.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I apologize for the delay. I was actually divided between another client and my three year old.   The vomiting may signal the onset of the stomach flu after all, or may be an additional symptom. Even if the symptoms begin to mimic a stomach flu, I would recommend he be evaluated. Compromised kidney function, insulin fluctuation, or chemical exposure can all result in vomitting. I don't want to add to your stress in any way, or appear overly alarmed. I fully expect a benign or treatable cause for his symptoms, but I also want to ensure his safety. God luck to you both, I hope he is feeling better, and you got just a little rest. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
