Sent to Health Experts October 24, 2006 12:20 a.m.

Hi
I am mail 46 years.
I have a hyper thyroid problem for the last 3 years.
Nov 2004 i had Nuclear iodine 8 Mq treatment.
The results where late and insufficient.
I went to another doctor and he suggest higher doze ( 20 Mq +/-) repeating treatment.
1. do you think it is ok to have this treatment again ?
2. can I come back home after taking the pill without isolation ?

Thanks

While I am unable to make a spcific comment about your individual case, studies show that while a majority of people require only a single radioactive iodine treatment for an overactive thyroid gland, some (less than 5%) may require a repeat treatment to control this condition.

With repeat treatment the chances of later onset hypothryoid become higher..., but other than this there are no major problems with this drug. In fact, the incidence of thyroid cancer is less in such treated glands, probably because of the destruction of the thyroid tissue.

Radioactive iodine is a safe, effective, and time tested (over 50 years of use) treatment of hyperthyroidism.

While isolation is NOT needed, for approximately 11 days after treatment prolonged (more than 2 hours in 24 hours) contact with pregnant/ breastfeeding mothers and children should be avoided..

can you tell that 20mq shoold be sufficient ?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

That would have to be inidividualized as per response to the previous dose, the clinical condition of the patient,
Hopefully this dose should work for you. As I said there are no major problems other than an increased risk of later hypothyroidism with a repeat dose,
All the best,
