Hi,
There can be various causes for your problem of numbness and swelling of hands-
  • diabetes
  • underactive thyroid gland
  • calcium deficiency
  • vitamin B12 deficiency
  • alcohol or tobacco toxicity
Of all the above causes the most probable one seems to be an underactive thyroid. In this there occurs calcium deficincy. Calcium is needed for proper functioning of the nerves and muscles. Initially it starts with tingling and then goes on to weakness of muscle.
I would advise you to consult your doctor and get a thyroid function test and blood sugar levels done, followed with supplementation of the thyroid hormone if need be. In the meantime take calcium supplements and good calcium rich diet like milk, cheese, curd etc.
